Shadows of a Promise
Grace was overjoyed by her pregnancy despite the turbulent circumstances surrounding it. She looked forward to meeting her son, and wished her parents were still alive to share the joys of family with her — not to say that she was lonely. Parts of her she knew she’d never get back had already gone missing despite the Ruiz family's unwavering support. She couldn’t help the isolation and abandonment she concealed behind her blazing personality. She would never be walked down the aisle by her father. She would never get to introduce her child to his grandparents — and that was an undeniable truth she had to live with."
For that reason, she was determined to build the brightest future for her child, which—against all instincts—involved Jessie. Not out of desperation—or perhaps it was—but as a way to settle the score. Her plot of revenge and manipulation did not stop with sabotaging her aunt’s broken marriage. Jessie's penance would be to raise her child as his own and provide support, never knowing that the real father was Dominique. Not a soul would know, not even her son himself. It was a choice she was also prepared to live with.
A part of her still had feelings for Jessie—foolishly enough. Perhaps the promise of a child would be enough to help them overcome his crude betrayal, and to weave their fractured bond back into the blissful couple they used to be. Those aspirations were only smoke and mirrors, and she knew it. She still chose to hold onto the illusion for as long as possible, because the harsh truth was, she could not bear the idea of having someone else she loved exit her life. Which is why she was meeting with Jessie with multiple positive pregnancy tests, to make the announcement irrefutable. Jessie would be compelled to take responsibility for the pregnancy. They could even get married and have children together if everything went according to plan. The happy family life she'd always dreamed about was just out of reach. All she had to do was play her cards right.
