Looking Back
As Grace stood before the splendor of Cordelia Falls, the cold water swirled between her fingers as the warm sun of Henford-on-Bagley kissed her fair skin. Her apprehensions were drowned by the soothing roar of the cascading water, and in that very moment, she felt infinitely grateful for the simple joys of life. Things hadn't always been that way, and reflecting back on her life made the moment even more priceless.
She was born to a couple whose love story began in the most unexpected way. Her father, Daniel Marcum, lived a quiet, uneventful life that consisted of the monotony of a 9-to-5 job as a mortician, peppered by occasional religious gatherings.
Grace still held the stories he had told about her mother very close to her heart, as they were the only things she had left of her. Madilyn Oates was her name, and Daniel described her as fiery and unpredictable. Funny enough, he always joked about their similar temperaments, and those close to Grace could definitely advocate for it.
Her father had grown numb to the idea of love after witnessing the bottomless pit of betrayal that characterized his own parents' relationship, until he met Madilyn—a mesmerizing dark-haired woman he caught brutalizing the garbage can outside his house, who also happened to be his neighbor! Madilyn's unapologetic and bold display of rage that day was Daniel's most cherished memory, as it marked the beginning of their love story. "Maddie," as he liked to call her, was quirky, impulsive, and audacious—just as much a misfit as he felt back then. One thing led to another until an unexpected bundle of joy arrived. It was a little girl, as dark-haired and beautiful as her mother—"his little firecracker."
How it annoyed her being called that growing up! Grace would give anything to hear him say that again today...
She wished she had been a better daughter, despite finding comfort in his written will, knowing he loved her just the way she was. She wished she could take back all the horrible things she had said throughout her teenage years or at least apologized before it was too late—just like it had been too late for him to ask Maddie's hand in marriage before she tragically passed away.
She wished she had met her mother... Finally, she wished she had given her father more credit for managing to raise a little one on his own. She may have failed to appreciate the sacrifices her father made for her, but she could only hope that her son would cherish the opportunities she never had.
Everything she had been through was coming full circle in a sarcastic yet cynical way. Grace was determined not to let her story become that of her son's, even if it meant taking secrets to her grave.
