Between Comfort and Truth

Although she would have loved another bundle of joy, Grace was relieved when the pregnancy test came back negative. A child right now wouldn’t have been the right path—not after everything that happened with Jessie and Dominique.

A side of her unapologetically enjoyed the attention Malakai had given her, no matter how superficial it may seem to outsiders. He was kind, affectionate, attentive—frankly, everything she could have wished for in a potential partner, if only he had entered her life in a different chapter… Despite everything, Grace remained grounded and realistic.

It was time to move on—as cold as it sounded.

The pregnancy scare was a wake-up call—a warning that she might have gotten a little too comfortable in Henford-on-Bagley, and clearly in her new lover’s arms as well.  It also seemed that Malakai was starting to catch feelings. The man wore his heart on his sleeve, and Grace knew too well that his jokes about commitment and about having—not one but five—children were not merely pleasantries.

It all hinted at new aspirations he had for their relationship—something she wasn't able to offer. The thought of it troubled her heart, making it difficult to focus. She had been so invested in the excitement of a new connection that she had lost sight of why she ever went on this journey to begin with.

There had never been a greater journey than to find oneself. Although Henford-on-Bagley had been so welcoming and even though Malakai felt like home, she finally realized she wouldn't find herself by getting lost in either.

A part of her felt guilty for temporarily using Malakai to fill in the insatiable pit that was loneliness. She wouldn't call it "Love", but another part of her was grateful for all the peaceful moments they shared. It became painfully apparent that neither of them was what they needed at the time. It didn't make the conversation any easier, but it anchored it in cold truth.

Grace ended their relationship by announcing her departure for Sulani.

It may not have made any sense to Malakai, and he may resent her for it, but the decision was probably the best outcome — for both, before it all got more complicated, as ungraceful as it sounded.

Next destination: Sulani.
