Waves of Reflection
Grace and Zach arrived in Sulani in the late hours of the night. Although they looked forward to exploring the beautiful island the following day, Grace's mind was too restless to sleep. The soothing waves brushing over the sand soon calmed her nerves as she savored a glass of wine. She watched the stars from the rooftop of their rental boathouse. A mixture of melancholy and bliss washed over her as she shut her eyes, anchoring herself in the moment.
Malakai flashed into her thoughts, and so did guilt. The circumstances of her departure from Henford-on-Bagley were far from ideal. She admitted to herself that she had enjoyed his company more than she should have and wished things could have stayed as simple as they had started.
The word love blinked into perspective. Her heart had been scorched by betrayal the last time she allowed such feelings in. Perhaps pushing Malakai away was merely a reflex of self-preservation against whatever she was beginning to feel for him.
She had thought Sulani, in all its beauty, would be enough to distract her from these thoughts. Yet there she was, haunted by the idea of him and the moments they had shared. She occasionally took peeks at his social media profile as if to silently beg him to reach out to her.
The following days were spent experiencing everything Sulani had to offer diving, sailing, sampling local cuisine, and spending time on the beach with Zach. Grace even started writing a new book. The golden beaches of Sulani and its rich culture provided more than enough inspiration for another bestseller. She kept herself occupied and entertained, despite occasional hints of sadness creeping in.
Even trying to distract herself with a fling from a dating app left much to be desired. What was meant to be a brief escape only reminded her of how empty the moment felt, in contrast to how seen Malakai always made her feel.
It all seemed to circle back to him. However, reaching out after she’d been the one to distance herself proved tricky. With the help of a very good friend, Dazmine, Grace was able to craft a sensible postcard to Malakai that didn’t read as awkwardly as her initial draft. She couldn’t openly admit that she had been missing him or that she perhaps had made a mistake—at least not without sounding insecure. Dazmine had helped her find just the right words:
"I trust this message finds you well. Zach is growing every day and me, well, I'm just living life one day at a time.
Sincerely,
Grace"
Grace had no expectations for any reaction from Malakai—not after everything. She simply wanted him to know that she was thinking about him. She hoped that their mixed feelings would eventually settle enough for them to at least find a friend in each other.
